Breaking Bread and Building Connections
Our creative lead is blabbering about the pomp and grandeur of Durga Pooja, while the other artist as usual, busy in praising his choice of PM for coming election season, the animation lead is busy showing a new video on VR (virtual reality) and a new joinee is sharing her cuisine she had cooked herself today.
This is now the usual scenario of our lunch table, but this was not the case a few months ago. Earlier we used to have a smaller lunch table in office premises and it was utilized department wise. This sounds usual for many, as in many companies where people prefer to eat alone or in small teams but for us (small creative agency) it was countless missed interactions that promote collaboration, brainstorming, and socialization within the company. Also, a couple of associates in our office were a bit shy and usually hesitate to share their opinions or verdicts so freely. It is easy for them to feel left out, and these feelings might have been getting magnified for them while dealing with me.
So, one fine morning I requested to order a nice & huge table and put it in the pantry so that if the team wants, we all fit in together. And TADAAAA! ….. it worked, surprisingly our lunch table became the symbol of solidarity and the perfect outlet for our teammates- ranging from most intellectual to the weirdest talks. People started opening with their funny stories who may have never socialized otherwise. There is now more interaction between different departments and created bonds between people.
From that day onwards we at Dramantram started the ritual of KHAANA TIME, a time to break the bread together, breaking down walls and boundaries if any that can, unfortunately, separate individuals. We manage to have conversations with people of all departments: Concept Photography, Communication Design and Digital Marketing, Animation & Motion Graphic and Video Production while eating together. Fresh ideas started flowing in and now it results in an array of thoughts and perspectives.
Eating together is a seemingly mundane act. It’s just two or more people sitting down and eating a meal. But in reality, eating together can be very significant. When people share the same space to have a meal, it’s a strong unifier that builds a place of community. Food acts as a kind of social glue. According to Kevin Kniffin, Professor of Economics at Charles H. Dyson Cornell University, “Eating together is a more intimate act than looking over an Excel spreadsheet together. That intimacy spills back over into work” (Cornell Chronicle).
There are myriad reasons to have food together in the workplace with some of the superpowers of the same are as below-
Makes you more productive – it is widely known that if you eat together, you work better together. Eating together can easily be considered as a team-building activity with positive results.
It's good for your wellbeing-Imagine sitting with your colleagues tasting different kinds of dishes at one time sounds great and tastes heavenly? It’s like everyday potluck event. Also, eating with your coworkers opens up healthy means of communications and can also help alleviate stress.
It helps improve communication- It is believed that more comfortable with a person sharing your meal the more trust you create and so better overall communication.
Creates opportunities for networking- Eating together in a large enterprise offers you a chance to talk to people from other departments. It not only keeps you updated about what's happening in other departments but also helps to build contacts that may come in handy in the future.
Last but not least It makes us happy - When friendships are fostered in the workplace, there is a better sense of job satisfaction.
The lunch break is the perfect time to have a good giggle with your colleagues and friends. They put those work woes into perspective and give you the outlet you need to de-stress, offload and go back to work feeling fresh, focused and full of energy.
So, why not give it a go? We hope that just like us, you will also love the KHANA TIME and reinforce the bonds with your teammates and hence increase the productivity of your company.
